# How do content creators make money? Getting paid to promote brands on X

> Creators earn from platform payouts, brand deals, affiliate links, products and subscriptions. On X that means Original Content Rewards and sponsored posts. How each works, who pays you, and how to get paid to promote brands.

**Content creators make money in five main ways: platform payouts (the platform shares ad revenue), brand deals (a brand pays you to post about it), affiliate commissions, selling their own products, and paid subscriptions. Most combine several. On X specifically, the platform pays through its Original Content Rewards program, and brands pay through sponsored posts.** Sponsored posts are the one income stream you price yourself, and the one that doesn't require a huge audience.

## How do content creators make money?

| Income stream | Who pays you | What it needs |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Platform payouts | The platform (a share of ad revenue) | Meeting the platform's eligibility thresholds |
| Brand deals / sponsored posts | A brand | An audience a brand wants to reach |
| Affiliate commissions | A brand or affiliate network, per sale | Followers who buy what you recommend |
| Products and merch | Your customers | Something to sell |
| Subscriptions and memberships | Your fans | Content worth paying for |

Income is uneven. In The Influencer Marketing Factory's 2026 survey of 1,000 US creators, 48.7% earned under $10,000 a year from content, 45.6% earned $10,000–$100,000 and 5.7% earned more than $100,000. The same report found product sales and affiliate marketing make up 21.2% of creator income, a sign creators are spreading earnings across streams.

## How does X pay creators?

X replaced its Creator Revenue Sharing program with the **Original Content Rewards** program in September 2026. As reported from X's announcement, you need:

- an X Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription;
- more than 500 verified followers;
- more than 500,000 Home timeline impressions from verified users in the past 90 days (replies don't count);
- original content: posts in your own voice, not reuploads.

Payouts are based on impressions from Premium users and paid every two weeks. That's a real income stream for accounts with large reach. X has also been steering that money toward original posts: in April 2026, it cut payouts to news-aggregator and clickbait accounts to 60% for a pay cycle, with a further cut planned, saying they "crowded-out real creators". That change is about X's own creator payouts; it doesn't affect brand deals or sponsored posts, which are paid by the brand. For most creators, brand deals pay more per post and start at much smaller audiences.

## How can creators get paid to promote brands?

A brand pays you a fixed fee (and sometimes a commission on sales) to post about its product to your audience, clearly labelled as an ad. To get those deals you need:

1. **A clear niche.** Brands buy audiences, so say who yours is.
2. **Engagement.** Replies and clicks matter more than follower count.
3. **A way to be found.** A profile on a marketplace, a media kit, or brands contacting you directly.
4. **Proper disclosure.** The platform's own label (on X, the Paid partnership label), plus #ad in the text if you like.
5. **Fair pricing.** See [How much do influencers charge per post?](/blog/sponsored-post-rates-by-follower-count)

## Who pays you as an influencer?

The brand pays, either directly or through a marketplace or agency. The safest arrangement is one where the brand's money is committed **before** you post, and released on an objective check rather than an invoice you have to chase.

## How it works on Transformer

Transformer is the agentic influencer marketplace: real creators, paid on verified posts. Run it from the dashboard or from your agent.

1. **Sign in with X** (read-only: Transformer can't post for you or read your DMs).
2. **Get offers** at your @handle: a short ask, a link and a price for one X post. Once you accept, the brand pays before you post.
3. **Post in your own words** on X, with the link, and turn on X's Paid partnership label (#ad as well is optional).
4. **Submit the post URL.** When it's verified (live, your account, the link, the Paid partnership label), your **80%** is credited.
5. **Get paid out** by PayPal or USDC, from $10.

Suggested prices start at $50 a post ($40 to you) for accounts under 5,000 followers. See [How many followers do you need for brand deals?](/blog/how-many-followers-for-brand-deals) and [How sponsorship payouts work](/blog/how-sponsorship-payouts-work).
